WHAT IS GENERAL SKILLED MIGRATION?

The general skilled migration program is for those people who are not sponsored by an employer and who have skills in occupations that Australia needs to fill labor shortages. Applicants must be over 18 and under 45 years of age and speak good English. They must also have recent skilled work experience or a recently earned and eligible Australian qualification as well as qualifications for an occupation listed on Australia’s skilled occupation list.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TAFE AND UNIVERSITIES?

TAFE courses are more vocationally-focused than university which means students are better prepared for the workplace. TAFE is also a more economical option and our courses are very flexible. Many TAFE courses provide pathways into university and allow for recognition of prior learning.

WHAT TYPE OF SUPPORT SERVICE IS AVAILABLE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS?

Australia is an international leader in safeguards and support services for international students. Student support services are available in all the institutes/universities free of cost.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I FAIL TO RENEW MY VISA?

If you do not renew your visa, University is obliged to report your case to DIAC for noncompliance with the rules of your student visa, and you may be asked to show cause why you should not be asked to leave Australia immediately. It is expected that students would make an application for a visa extension at least six to eight weeks prior to their current visa expiry date.

Are Australian qualification recognized in my home country?

Australian qualifications are respected internationally when seeking employment or further study at leading international universities.

Are there any conditions attached to a student visa?

Yes. All international students must study a minimum of 20 hours per week. You must also attend at least 80 per cent of your classes or risk having your visa cancelled.

Are there any restrictions on NZ citizens traveling to Australia?

New Zealander who are likely to face the restricted entry are citizens with untreated tuberculosis or who have been deported, excluded or removed from any country. These should lodge an appropriate visa application with Australian consulate- general in Auckland

Can I apply for a tourist/visitor visa after completing my program?

Student must contact the department of immigration and citizen (DIAC) to determine their eligibility for a visa.

Can I complain if I am not satisfied with a service or area of the university?

You may make a suggestion or lodge a complaint about any academic, administrative or support services of the University, through the Student Complaints Policy.

Can I do part time work during studies?

Yes, students can work 20 hours per week and full time during summer vacations

Can I drive in Australia?

Yes, if you have international driving license.

Can I extend my student visa?

It depends on which country you are from and whether you have no further stay or no further study condition on your visa.

Can I get PR after studying in Australia?

Students can apply for PR after completion of 2 years of study in Australia.

Can I work in Australia after completing my education?

Yes, you can work in Australia if you get a full-time job with a company. It is not easy to get jobs though. If you do not get a job, you have to return back.

CAN MY SPOUSE WORK WHILE I AM STUDYING?

Yes. If you are studying TAFE or undergraduate program, spouse can work 20 hours per week and if student is studying PG or research, spouse can work full time.

The Australian Tax Office has advised that an international student (and their spouse) whose course of study is six months or longer will be treated as a Resident of Australia for income tax purposes. This means that you can earn $6000 a year before paying any income tax.

DO NZ TRAVELERS NEED TO APPLY FOR PR BEFORE ENTERING AUSTRALIA?

Citizens traveling on NZ passport do not need to apply for migration to live in Australia. However they should be aware of restrictions on access to social security allowances before deciding to live in Australia.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR TAX FILE NUMBER?

You will need a tax file number to give to your employer if you should find part-time work as well as your bank. If you do not supply the tax file number to your bank the account may automatically be deducted a large amount in tax if the account earns interest. HOW DO I ARRANGE A HEALTH EXAMINATION?

You must arrange your health examination with a panel doctor and/or radiologist nominated by the Australian Government. Examination reports by non-panel doctors/radiologists are usually not accepted.

HOW DO I GET THE CONFIRMATION FROM THE UNIVERSITY THAT I ENROLLED AS A FULL TIME STUDENT?

University will offer you a confirmation of enrolment which includes that they accept you as a full time student.

HOW DO I RENEW MY OSHC?

As a rule, you are responsible for renewing your overseas student health cover. You can choose to remain with your original overseas student health cover provider or elect to change to a new provider. Please contact your chosen provider for information on required procedures.

HOW DO I RENEW MY VISA?

Visit your International Office of university at least six weeks before your current student visa expires, to obtain the necessary documentation.

HOW LONG WILL I NEED TO STUDY TO REACH THE ADEQUATE ENGLISH LEVEL?

There are six major categories of English language courses catering for all levels of proficiency from beginner to advance. Full-time course duration generally ranges from four to 48 weeks and students can enroll at any time during the year.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO FOR ADMISSION LETTER AFTER SUBMIT THE DOCUMENTS?

You will get your admission letter within 12 weeks after you submit all the documents. Please do not worry about the process after you have submitted the documents.

HOW MANY UNIVERSITIES WILL I APPLY TO?

We will apply to two to three universities only. After all, you will be joining just one university. Once you enroll, we study your profile and suggest you a list of universities where you can get admission. Then we list the universities in order of your preference. We would try to get you an admission in your first choice university.

HOW MUCH CAN I EARN BY DOING PART TIME WORK?

This will depend on the kind of job that you get. Rates of pay for casual work for students range from A$ 6 to A$ 10 per hour.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO STUDY IN AUSTRALIA?

An Australian Government survey showed that in terms of total costs—including tuition fees and living expenses—Australia was consistently less expensive than the USA and UK. Tuition fees will vary depending on the course or institution this website provides average costs as a guide.

IS IT EASY TO GET JOBS IN AUSTRALIA AFTER FINISHING MY STUDIES?

Getting a job is not easy. It is possible if you perform well in your program and in your job interviews. Going by the past statistics, some Indian students have managed to find jobs and have stayed back after completion of their education. However, there is no guarantee.

IS THERE AN APPLICATION FEE?

All the universities do not charge application fee but there are some.

WHAT DO I DO IF I AM ILL BEFORE OR DURING EXAMINATIONS?

If you are unwell before an exam, or if physical illness or injury affects your academic performance during an exam, be sure to see your doctor or contact the staff at the University Health Service24 for a medical certificate. The certificate needs to be presented to Student Administration along with an Application for special consideration25 form. If you are ill during an examination and your performance is genuinely affected you should notify the examination supervisor and go directly to the University Health Service.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I CANNOT PAY MY FEE ON TIME?

Make an appointment to see an International Student Advisor as soon as possible. You can do this through the International Offices of the university.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I COMPLETE MY DEGREE EARLIER THAN EXPECTED?

You must leave the country within 28 days of completing your program – even if your visa is not due to expire – The University will notify the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) of your early completion and DIAC will check that you leave Australia.

If you do not meet the entry requirements for further study you can enroll in secondary school in Australia. If you do not meet undergraduate course entry requirements you may be able to enroll in Foundation Studies which prepare you for further study.

WHAT IS AN ELECTRONIC TRAVEL AUTHORITY?

An ETA enables genuine short term tourist or business visitors to Australia of nominated nationalities to obtain authority to travel to Australia at the same time as they book their travel arrangements without the need to apply for a Visa. The ETA is issued electronically through computer links between DIAC and travel agents, airlines and specialist service providers around the world. The conditions are that you will not work in Australia and you will not stay in Australia for more than 3 months. A visitor ETA is valid for multiple travels to Australia for 12 months from the date of issue.

WHAT IS NOT COVERED BY OSHC?

OSHC does not cover: • assisted reproduction services, such as in-vitro fertilization (IVF); • treatment arranged before coming to Australia; • treatment needed while traveling to or from Australia; • treatment during the first 12 months of membership for pre-existing medical conditions or disabilities; • pregnancy-related services if the length of the visa is for 3 months or less; • transportation of a dependant or overseas student into or out of Australia in any circumstance; or • treatment covered by provisions for compensation and damages

WHY ARE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS REQUIRED TO MAINTAIN OVERSEAS STUDENT HEALTH COVER (OSHC)?

Without access to the safety net of Medicare, international students may have difficulty paying for medical treatment. As a result, overseas student health cover (OSHC) was introduced to ensure international students have adequate health care arrangements during their stay in Australia.
